前事之不忘，后事之师
——《战国策·赵策》
格言大意：不能忘记从前的经验和教训，因为它可以成为后来做事的借鉴。
Main Idea: Don’t forget earlier experiences and lessons because they can be used for reference in the future.
唐以隋为戒（Tang Dynasty drawing lessons from Sui）
唐朝统一后，为了巩固统治，唐太宗京城和大臣一起探讨隋朝灭亡的教训。有一次唐太宗问：“隋文帝是怎样的一个皇帝？”大臣房玄龄回答说：“是个勤于政事的皇帝。”唐太宗不以为然。还有一次唐太宗问：“隋炀帝文章写得很好，为什么做事恰恰相反呢？”大臣魏征做了解答。
After the Tang Dynasty was founeded, Emperor Taizong of Tang often discussed with his ministers the lessons of the downfall of the Sui Dynasty in order to secure his rule in the country. Once Taizong asked: “What kind of an emperor was Sui Wendi?” His minister Fang Xuanling answered:”He was a very diligent emperor.” Taizong didn’t approve of him. In another occasion, Taizong asked: “Sui Yangdi did well in writing .Why was his action exactly the opposite?” His minister Wei Zheng gave his the answer.
